Benefits of supported living for young people

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

The aim of supported living is to offer support to young people whilst giving them space to maintain independency. Each individual is assisted in a way that’s bespoke to them; it can be physically, emotionally, or/and mentally.

One of the many benefits of supported living is that it allows individuals to live independently, by encouraging them to pay their own bills, prepare meals, maintain their households and other independent tasks. Supported living is good for younger people as it allows them to prepare for adulthood while also having the necessary support.

Another reason why supported living is beneficial is because the support the individual receives will be catered to their needs, for example if the individual has mental health conditions, there are supported living programs that can help provide appropriate support such as a counselling or therapy. Furthermore, the process of switching from an environment you're used to to living with other people, or by yourself, can be challenging so support is provided until the young person is confident they can take on the full responsibilities of adulthood. There will also be regulated staff present.
