Over the years social media has solidified its place in many people’s lives. The development of social media has been extremely beneficial in many ways; however, the negative effects can be extremely harmful to your mental health. There are many enjoyable ways to spend time away from social media, which we’ll be looking at in this blog.
Become an illustrator
Drawing is not only a good alternative use of time, but it can also help you explore your creativity and become more self-aware. According to Helpline “anything you draw can help you express your feelings and attune you to the present moment.” By doing this you can gain a clear perception of reality, as constantly consuming unauthentic content can blur the line between real life and fabricated content.
Create a vision board
Another creative activity is to make a vision board. You can make a vision board by adding images, text, or drawings of things you would like to achieve or experience in the future. This improves motivation as you can visually see your goals while also creating a clear path to reach them.
Doing nothing
This may seem unproductive, however research from Getresponse states that “constantly stimulating our minds with information can lower our productivity and creativity”, which could then lead to exhaustion. So, sitting back and letting your mind wander can increase focus and clarity, and allow new ideas to flourish.
Local sports group
Many communities have various sports activities in place such as park runs/walks, cycling groups, football clubs and many more. By joining one of these group activities, you are not only taking care of your physical health but you’re also gaining a sense of community and creating new relationships.
1 + 1 = a new taste
Lastly, for those who enjoy baking and cooking, it is popular to try new recipes, but have you ever thought about putting two recipes together? This could create a whole new taste and bring originality to your dish which you can then share with friends and family.
I have only brushed the surface of the things you can do instead of scrolling through social media. There is truly something out there for everyone if none of these activities appeal to you, such as pottery, fencing, watching a new TV series, taking a walk, spending time with loved ones, practicing calligraphy, gardening, birdwatching, picnics, making tie dye-shirts and exploring new hiking trails.
